What Does NADCAP Accreditation AC7004 Mean for AOTCO?

What is NADCAP?
Created in 1990, NADCAP (National Aerospace and Defense Contractors Accreditation) includes an intensive and highly specified set of requirements for manufacturers working in the aerospace and defense industries. The Aerospace and defense industries have incredibly high stakes, and therefore need to ensure that their suppliers are following a very strict set of rules and regulations.

Unlike many other traditional quality assurance methods, NADCAP is an industry-managed program. This means that the requirements of the program are decided and agreed upon by industry leaders and government officials. The NADCAP program combines the technical expertise of industry to reduce risk across the aerospace and defense industries.

Prior to the creation of NADCAP in the early 90’s, each aerospace company had their own audit that they would require their suppliers to meet. While each of these processes came from a different aerospace company, they all contained similar requirements. The repetition of the same requirements through different audits was redundant to say the least.

Why NADCAP?

NADCAP audits examine a company’s entire body of processes. From production elements such as material use, material storage, operator consistency, and equipment to more external factors such as outsourcing partnerships and purchasing processes. All these elements must follow NADCAP’s process to successfully pass the audit and receive NADCAP certification.

While the audit itself is a lengthy and highly-specificized process, it demonstrates to current or potential customers that our company is process-driven. In a poll conducted by PRI, 94% of suppliers claimed that they felt as though NADCAP certification added value to their company, as well as 70% reporting that their defect rates had decreased.
