Metal finishing in Massachusetts from AOTCOAOTCO uses a large number of materials and substrates to meet the diverse needs of our customers. Our Material/Substrates page has an entire list. Contact us if, for any reason, there is a materials that is not listed. We enjoy the challenge and opportunity to work with new materials. In recent blogs, we have been talking about some of the unique compounds that have revolutionized metal finishing and related industrial applications such as defense, aerospace, or electronics. Some of our customers might not be familiar with Beryllium Oxide. This compound has a number of useful properties and especially shines in electronic applications where its high thermal conductivity and notable electrical insulation makes it particularly useful. It also has a number of uses in rocket engines, ceramics, high performance microwaves, vacuum tubes, magnetrons, and gas lasers.

Beryllium Oxide is created by first extracting beryllium containing ores from the ground. When an alkali solution is allowed to react with the ore, it forms Beryllium hydroxide. The Beryllium Hydroxide is then, typically, reacted with sulfuric acid to form a beryllium sulfate precipitate, which is a highly pure and concentrated form of the Beryllium. The Precipitate is then heated at between 1150 and 1450 degrees centigrade to form Beryllium Oxide, which then forms a white powder that can be used in metal finishing. Technicians must handle Beryllium Oxide with care in its powder state since in this form it is a carcinogenic compound and can be toxic if breathed. However once it is fired into a solid form it is exceedingly safe to handle and poses no risk. Our many certifications attest to our expertise and ability to handle this material carefully and safely for the benefit of our customers and employees.

Beryllium Oxide is notable because it has the highest thermal conductivity of a non-metal second only to a diamond. When used in metal finishing Beryllium oxide is chemically stable, thermally conductive, and electrically resistive, which makes it useful for any number of applications.
